Leaving Ullapool

View towards the Summer Isles en route

First view of Lewis
Thursday 10th September
After a very good crossing yesterday with no sign of seasickness from Mr P we quickly found a place to have our lunch then retuned into town to the Tesco superstore! A much larger store than Ullapool, but it is also a much larger town. Shopping done we set off across the island, where the bleak peat moorland reminded me of the Falklands, to the the West Side to find our campsite at South Shawbost. Mary made us very welcome and after a couple of hours researching campsite and ferry availability we booked in here until Sunday morning. We can easily tour from here although that was not our original intention. I confess I was very disappointed that we can't find spaces on the west of Harris.
After a lazy start this morning we set off to the north of the island, visiting Cross stores at Ness on the way. I found this store on Google and it is amazing. You can buy good quality groceries, fresh bread, pies, ready meals, a pair of slippers or just the nut and bolt you have been looking for! They made us very welcome too.
Then we drove on to Port Ness which is still a small fishing port with a very well sheltered harbour. The wind was blowing!
This memorial was erected in 2014 by the community to remember the once extensive and prosperous fishing industry here .
We then went to look for the dunes by Eoropie. As we walked through them to the beach we both remarked that they reminded us of Namibia! We came out onto a wonderful beach seeing one other couple and thousands of jellyfish which had been washed up.
Memories of Namibia!

Then we drove on a very narrow single track road with passing places to the Butt of Lewis where there is a brick built lighthouse. Apparently the Butt is noted for being the windiest place in the British Isles.......we believe it!

There were some spectacular cliffs
All this was accomplished without getting wet, the rain came on as we drove back. A good day!
